The Formula for Getting Things Done

As a lot of you already know, I’ve been writing a book for the last couple of months, and it’s now in the editing phase. To be honest, if you found a time machine, went back in time and told me that I’d have a book released this year, I wouldn’t believe you (mostly because there are much cooler things to do if you find access to time travel). Writing a nonfiction book took a lot of effort, but it wasn’t as difficult as I had imagined——because I had a formula.

Process + Execution + Consistency = Done

A process is a series of actions or steps that you use to get to a particular end. My process included creating an outline, choosing a topic from my outline, and writing. I think of a process as a repeatable collection of small goals or tasks. When you break down a long-term goal into smaller tasks, the overwhelming feeling goes away, and you end up feeling accomplished at the end of each day.

Execution is the act of actually performing the steps of your process. An excerpt from my book explains the importance of this well:

“That was my first big lesson from entrepreneurship—no matter how good your idea is, if you fail to execute tasks, the idea can’t arrive into fruition. An idea is nothing more than a passive thought until you execute.”

Consistency is the most underrated element of getting things done. It’s often overlooked and downplayed as not important because it’s difficult. Doing something on a regular basis at a regularly scheduled time is so powerful because it quickly becomes a routine.

Let’s say you have a goal of losing 50 lbs. You start going to the gym every Monday, Wednesday, Friday. At first, you give yourself a pat on the back after every time you go. After 6 months when you reach your goal, you keep going every Monday, Wednesday, Friday because it’s become a routine and no longer feels like a chore. You actually LIKE it now, and it pushes you to even greater heights!

I made it a point to write every day. Sure, things came up and I missed a few, but for the most part I was consistent, and that made it possible to finish in 2 months what takes some others a year or two to finish. Consistency is a powerful tool that can push us to achieve things we never thought we could.

By using this formula, you can achieve more seemingly difficult things than you ever thought possible. Instead of just starting things, you can actually finish them, and have a portfolio of accomplishments.
