January 1st Is No Better Than Today

work every day like it's january first

As I write this, it’s December 1st.

You’ve already begun thinking of your goals or resolutions for next year. January 1st symbolizes a fresh start and a new beginning. A day to leave the past behind and look forward to the future. Next year is the year you will ____.

What I really want you to think about is where your mind is at right now. This second.

I notice it every year with others and with myself—December is one of the least productive months for new ideas and entrepreneurial ventures.

It’s not because we lack ideas or even the drive to get started, it’s that we see a new year as an opportunity to be a milestone, and so does everyone else.

There’s nothing wrong with setting goals at the beginning of the year, but ponder this, which we’ve all done for as long as we can remember, no matter what the goals have been:

We say, “Starting January 1st, I’m gonna CRUSH it!”

But I have a challenge for you—start now. January 1st is no better than today.

It’s just another box on the wall like every other waiting to be crossed off. What will you do today that will impact your tomorrow? What goals can you set and begin executing that will change your path for next year?

Work today with the same tenacity as you would on January 1st. Write your first blog post, donate your first dollar, run your first mile. No matter your goal—start today, don’t wait.

I’ve mentioned the statistic before that only 1 out of 8 people typically accomplish their resolutions, and the rest give up before the 8th of February. The biggest reason is because most people don’t know how to practice smart goal setting.
